ISO 9000 Standard Family

Since 1947 ISO has been developing voluntary technical standards over almost all sectors of business, industry, and technology. Before ISO 9000 was published in 1987, the ISO standards were highly specific to particular products, materials, or processes. ISO 9000 is know as generic management system standard, which means that the same standard can be applied to any organization irrespective of its products and sector of activity.

ISO 9000 is family of standards. The ISO 9000 standards were published in 1987, and new versions of the standards saw daylight in1994. The changes made in 1994 were, nevertheless, quite small. Completely renewed versions were published in 2000. The number of standards was now reduced to make the standards more understandable and easier to use. At the moment, ISO 9000 quality standards consist of three core standards:

  • ISO 9000 Quality management system - Fundamentals and vocabulary
  • ISO 9001 Quality management system - Requirements
  • ISO 9004 Quality management system - Guidelines for performance improvement

ISO 9001:2000 standard provides the requirements for the quality management system, which can be used by an organization to improve its customer satisfaction by meeting the customers' requirements. Organizations which have used ISO 9001/9002/9003:1994 standards can now use just one standard - ISO 9001:2000. In the future, this will be the only standard with which an organization can be certified.
